Starting 3 year old kindergarten is an exciting time for you and your child. Knowing if your child is ready to start kindergarten can however sometimes be difficult. The more independent and emotionally confident they are, the better equipped they will be to participate and enjoy the many social interactions with educators and peers.
Whilst every child is different and each child develops at a different rate, parents need to consider when is the right time to send their child to kindergarten. The ages of children attending the three year old program can vary greatly. This is more apparent especially if your child is turning three during the first term of the year they commence three year old kindergarten.
In Victoria, 2 years of funded kindergarten are offered: a single year of 3 year old and a single year of 4 year old kinder. A second year of funded four year old kindergarten may only be considered when a child shows delays in learning and development and development outcome areas; and where it is agreed and believed that a kindergarten program will be the most appropriate learning program for the child with better outcomes than if they were to transition to school after a single year. Children who are 'just young' will not meet the eligibility criteria.
To assist in your decision, you can use the when to Start 3YO Kindergarten Calculator on the Vic Government Website (requires only your child's Date of Birth) to see the recommended year of attendance for 3 YO kinder. Additionally, the following resources may be helpful:

If you would like to discuss your child's readiness with one of our teachers please do not hesitate to contact us .
